A lifelong love of the outdoors and admiration for Alfred Wainwright inspired Yorkshire-born engineer Chris Butterfield to build an archive that would honour the world-famous fellwalker and safeguard his legacy.

Assisted by his wife, Priscilla, Chris has amassed an extensive private collection of Wainwright material and created a popular Facebook group, Alfred Wainwright Books & Memorabilia, and a website, alfredwainwright.co.uk
Chris has published numerous articles about Wainwright and has appeared on television and radio to discuss the life, work and achievements of the late, great fellwanderer.

In the Council Chamber, Chris discusses the life of Alfred Wainwright and the people who knew him. This includes his book publishing history and how it all began over 70 years ago. Chris reveals his many discoveries over the years and explains his collaboration with sculptor Clive Barnard to produce a new Wainwright statue. Chris also talks about his new book – Wainwright Memories – featuring three unique Wainwright stories that took place during his later years. These tales will give the reader a deeper understanding of the inspirational fellwalker.

There will be refreshments, a question and answer section, and a Wainwright-related giveaway. Some notable guests will also be at the talk, including Wainwright’s former publisher, Andrew Nichol and Pictorial Guide reviser Chris Jesty.

NEW NSPCC FUNDRAISING EVENT

 Submitted by Steve Johnston 23rd Sept 2022 A MAJOR fundraising event has been unveiled to raise vital funds for Cumbria’s NSPCC charity. The new Cumbria Fair will take place over two days on October 11-12 at The Garden At Eden, near Carlisle. Its pop-up stalls will showcase many independent Cumbrian producers plus specialist goods from all over the country. Cumbria Fair aims to build on the success of the previous Carlisle NSPCC Christmas Fair which raised many thousands of pounds for the children’s charity. The annual event had to be cancelled because of the Covid outbreak.
