Free cultural events bring Spring cheer to Maryport
Submitted by Suzanne Elsworth, Elsworth Communications 14th March 2023
A host of free events are still to enjoy in Maryport this month as part of the town’s new
cultural offering.
From live music to author talks, a punk poet and a pub quiz, there is plenty happening
throughout March. The events are offered as part of the Made in Maryport project, funded by
Historic England as part of the Historic High Streets Cultural Programme and by Maryport
Town Council.
Author John Little appears at an event at the Town Hall in Senhouse Street on Thursday,
March 16 from 7.30pm. He’ll be talking about his book MacDonald’s Choice, an epic sea
saga.
Her Citi in Crosby Street hosts Cumbrian composer Owen Evans on Friday, March 17 from
6.30pm. He’ll be sharing his favourite music from stage and screen – even delving into the
scores of video games in his musical showcase.
Performance poet Attila the Stockbroker will be marking more than 40 years of performing
punk poetry at the Tap Tavern in High Street on Thursday, March 23 from 7.30pm.
The Lifeboat is the venue for a Cumbrian pub quiz with live music on Wednesday, March 29
from 7.30pm. Teams of three or four are welcome to join quiz host and musician Steve
Wharton for an evening celebrating this great county.
The finale, at 7.30pm on Friday, March 31, is a performance by poet Kim Moore at Maryport
Town Hall.
Kim is the co-director of Kendal Poetry Festival and hosts a monthly reading series for
Wordsworth Grasmere as well as running writing workshops for young people and adults.
‘What The Trumpet Taught Me’ is a collection of vivid snapshots, from her first lessons to
music college, then teaching the trumpet in schools and running a brass band, right through
to playing in working men’s clubs in a ten-piece soul band.
The events are free but booking is advised. Click here or search ‘Made in Maryport’ on
