Ennerdale Bridge is the first stop on Alfred Wainwright’s world famous coast-to-coast walk and the perfect location for a new variety night celebrating the life and works of the iconic fellwalker.
The evening features films, an exhibition of Wainwright collectables, songs, a mini-pub quiz and discussions about Wainwright and his legacy led by Chris Butterfield, Terry Abraham, Steve Wharton and David Powell-Thompson.
Chris Butterfield has created an extensive archive of Wainwright books and memorabilia, including all editions and print variations of every Alfred Wainwright book, printing negatives and more.
He founded an online community group for Wainwright enthusiasts, who meet on the odd occasion to go up a fell and down an ale. He writes a regular article for Cumbria magazine, runs a blog and a website covering the publishing & printing history of Wainwright's books.
Having taken part in films, TV, radio interviews & podcasts to discuss his archive, his love of fellwalking and Wainwright, Chris is about to launch his own book - Wainwright Memories - featuring three stories of trips AW took in his later years which will give readers a much deeper insight into the inspirational fellwalker.
As well as answering questions from the audience, Chris will be joined by three friends with their own insights on mountain life:
Terry Abraham is a self-taught filmmaker and photographer with a passion and interest for the outdoors which is second to none. After being made redundant from a lowly IT role, he chased a dream which lead to producing and directing the critically-acclaimed documentaries Life of a Mountain: Scafell Pike, Blencathra and Helvellyn. Having spent most of the year surrounded by his 'wee scamps' Terry's next film will be 'Cumbrian Red'. A beautiful insight into the conservation and life of our native squirrels.
Steve Wharton is a Cumbrian songwriter, filmmaker and children's author. His film about local miner, climber and painter Bill Peascod enjoyed screenings at film festivals worldwide whilst the Ennerdale Stories documentary is part of an ongoing oral history project in the area. Steve will be performing humorous songs written under his alter-ego, Half-Pint Wainwright.
David Powell-Thompson is a mountain guide and broadcaster who explores the fells from his home in Wasdale.
