COASTAL-THEMED DIGITAL ART EXHIBITION TO

LAUNCH AT COOKE’S STUDIOS THIS SPRING

SIGNAL FILM AND MEDIA are pleased to announce the launch of an exciting new

exhibition of artworks throughout April as part of our TIDAL programme of digital arts

activity focussing on the unique identity of the Furness coastline.

You and Me, Outside is the first of a series of artworks produced for TIDAL to be exhibited by

Manchester-based artist, Jack Brown and local young people. This will be the first of three

exhibitions taking place throughout 2023 as part of this digital arts programme and launches on

Friday 31st March at Cooke’s Studios.

Jack Brown has been working with year 10 pupils from a Barrow school during February and

March exploring the exhilarating Barrow coastline and creating artwork through exploration of

geographical and social boundaries. The collection of artworks are composed of sculpture, film,

digital imagery and even karaoke and are designed in response to our unique coastal proximity

and the objects that we see everyday, but don’t always notice.

In December 2022, Signal Film and Media held a digital artist development lab and mentoring

course for 16 local artists which offered three additional commissions to produce work for the

TIDAL project, two of which will be exhibited as part of this exhibition. David Haley & Ellie

Hoskins were the selected artists chosen for this exhibition.

Artist and researcher Dr David Haley uses the dynamic tide systems around his home on Walney

island for his film / installation EQUINOX: a day with an ocean’s edge. Visitors will experience the

tide's twelve hour cycle. In describing the piece David said “This water has travelled many

thousands of miles on the North Atlantic gyre to fill and invigorate this dynamic space; and then it

empties, only to be filled again.” The artwork is soundtracked with a recorded performance

between David and ‘foremost British contralto of her generation’ & young Cumbrian, Jess Dandy.

Cumbrian-born, Liverpool-based artist Elllie Hoskins' micro-commission, Fly on the Wall, is a

playful interaction between animation, text and sculpture which drifts between sincere and

poetic language, and humour. The overall narrative considers everyday domestic habits and how

they impact on our ability to go out, into and enjoy nature.

Co-Director, Loren Slater said,

“We can’t wait to shine a light on the Furness coastline and for people to take part in activities,

enjoy the exhibition and have conversations about our precious and important natural

environment.”
